In 1996, SANZ Wheelers emerged from the camaraderie of six South Africans and one Kiwi who shared a passion for cycling. Although two founding members eventually departed, the remaining enthusiasts continued to ride together, forging a lasting bond.

Saturday became the group's default ride day, drawing more cycling enthusiasts to the fold. By the end of 2006, SANZ Wheelers had expanded to 80 members and continued to grow steadily.

With the flourishing community, the need for a distinct identity arose. The group sought a name that encapsulated its South African and New Zealand roots, leading to the adoption of SANZ Wheelers. This cleverly combined "South Africa" and "New Zealand" with "Wheelers," reflecting their shared love for cycling.

To solidify their identity, a member skilled in logo design, clothing creation, and web design took charge. The result was the creation of a unique logo, bespoke clothing, and a fantastic website, expertly designed and hosted within the group. This initiative not only provided SANZ Wheelers with a visual identity but also a digital hub to connect, share, and plan rides.
