Uso Bike Ride
In 2010, Chris Te'o MNZM embarked on the Relay for Life Porirua, marking the genesis of USO Bike Ride. Motivated by this event and the personal loss of his father to Pancreatic cancer, Chris Te'o initiated the USO Bike Ride journey. The inaugural ride in 2011, alongside his brother-in-law Mark Lerwill, covered the distance from Auckland to Wellington, documented in the video: "Riding for My Father - The USO Bike ride story."
RIDING FOR MY FATHERUSO, derived from a Samoan word meaning brother, signifies unity and support specifically among men or women. Led by Chris Te'o MNZM, Tofilau Talalelei Taufale, and Meriama Taufale, the trio shapes and leads the USO initiative.
Understanding, Strengthening, Overcoming (USO) forms the core philosophy. For both men and women, the journey starts with a health check, emphasizing holistic well-being—physical, spiritual, mental, cultural, and relational aspects. The acronym guides individuals towards becoming their best selves for personal growth and their whanau (family).
UNDERSTANDING:USO focuses on understanding factors contributing to poor health among Polynesian communities. Education about the history of cycling in Polynesia and how USO enhances health through cycling is paramount.
STRENGTHENING:Identifying effective strategies and cultivating supportive relationships empower individuals and whanau to manage and improve their quality of life. Cycling, viewed as a team sport, aligns with USO's goal of personal health contributing to community well-being.
OVERCOMING:By strengthening effective approaches and fostering relationships, individuals become empowered to lead their best lives, overcoming health challenges and enjoying the ride.
KAUPAPA:USO Bike Ride stands for more than cycling; it symbolizes a community committed to holistic health, cultural pride, and collective well-being. Join us on the transformative journey of understanding, strengthening, and overcoming through the joy of biking.
