National Clarion Cycling Club

Dive into the captivating history of the Clarion Cycling Club, founded in 1894. Originating from a letter by Tom Groom, the club rapidly expanded, boasting around 120 attendees at the first Easter Meet in Ashbourne. The cycling craze of the 1890s, championed by the club and the Clarion paper, played a vital role in promoting women's participation.
The early Clarion cycling clubs garnered attention for socialist propaganda, including controversial stickers on cows. Despite initial encouragement, this practice was short-lived and faced criticism from the paper itself.
Robert Blatchford, the influential force behind Clarion, was a complex figure. While recognized for popularizing socialism, he held a nuanced approach to politics, emphasizing "making socialists" over traditional political engagement. The Clarion's influence extended to the birth of the Independent Labour Party (ILP) in 1893.
Blatchford's divergence on World War I and the "German menace" led to a decline in the Clarion's political influence. Despite this, the cycling club endured, retaining some political association even post-World War II. The Clarion continued until 1931, and Blatchford's legacy persisted until 1943.
The enduring principles of democracy, equality, and the motto "Fellowship Is Life" continue to define the Clarion Cycling Club, leaving an indelible mark on its historical journey. Explore the pages of Denis Pye's "Fellowship is Life" for a comprehensive look at this remarkable tale.
