About this club

Founded in 1874 during the peak of the Penny Farthing era, Southport Cycling Club has a rich history rooted in the town's cycling fervor. Early races were held on diverse tracks like grass at Cemetery Road, asphalt at the Winter Gardens, and a cinder track at Sussex Road. The club flourished in the late 19th century, organizing massed start road races and receiving prestigious awards like the Centenary Shield from Sir George Pilkington. The Great War marked a challenging period for cycling clubs, and Southport Cycling Club's fate during this time remains uncertain.

In 1932, the Southport Road Cycling Club emerged with twelve founding members, pioneering time trials and attracting riders like Les Hubbard and Dennis Kitchen. The club thrived through ups and downs, even weathering the losses of members during World War II. The post-war period saw cycling successes with Arnold Green, Bob Bird, and the emergence of the legendary Bill Bradley, who dominated British road racing. The 1960s and 1970s witnessed cyclocross stars like Mike Wilkinson, John Barton, and Terry Wignall.

In the 1980s, a new generation of cyclists, including Dave Williams and Kevin Reilly, made waves in national and international competitions. The club faced financial challenges but persisted with sponsorships from members like Mike Keen and Robert Whitfield. The late 20th century and early 21st century brought notable achievements in randonneuring, racing, and the construction of a dedicated clubroom.

While racing may have seen some decline in recent years, members found alternative ways to engage their competitive spirit. Randonneuring, annual Mallorca trips, and international adventures kept the club vibrant. The club's 75th anniversary marked significant milestones, including hosting the British 25-mile time trial championship. Surviving and thriving for 75 years, the Southport Cycling Club stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of cycling in the community
