Anfield Bicycle Club

Established in March 1879, the Anfield Bicycle Club holds the distinction of being one of the oldest cycling clubs globally, boasting a remarkable legacy. During the 1880s and 1890s, its pioneering members significantly influenced competitive long-distance cycling and time-trialling in the UK. Among its founders was George Pilkington Mills, hailed as the premier cyclist of his era. Mills not only set numerous long-distance records, including Land's End to John O'Groats on various contraptions but also clinched victory in the inaugural Bordeaux - Paris race in 1891, thus catalyzing the inception of the Tour de France. Notable figures like John Houlding, the club's second president and progenitor of the Liverpool Football Club, along with John Davenport Siddeley (Lord Kenilworth), a distinguished racing cyclist, motor car, and aircraft manufacturer, and Walter MacGregor Robinson, known as the cycling journalist Wayfarer, enriched the club's early membership, inspiring generations of cyclists post-World War I.
Thanks to the support from the Heritage Lottery Fund, the club has meticulously digitized its extensive collection of documents, photographs, and memorabilia spanning cycling history. The digitized treasure trove includes historic newsletters (the Anfield Circular), annual reports, race cards, and more, housed in our Amazing Anfielders digital archive. The original records now reside with Cheshire Archives and Local Studies (CALS) for public inspection.
We are thrilled to share our archive with enthusiasts, but it's important to note that all items in the collection remain the copyright of the Anfield Bicycle Club and should not be used without our written consent. For high-quality reproductions of documents and images, please reach out to the Honorary Secretary.
Our club activities encompass Saturday club runs in West Cheshire, weekends in North Wales, and the iconic Anfield 100, an annual event held every Spring Bank Holiday Monday on the scenic roads of Shropshire
