Founded in 1996, the CMBA originated as an advocacy group responding to the looming threat of mountain bike bans on various trails, including Bowmont Park and Nose Hill. Successfully changing perceptions within the City of Calgary and the provincial government, the CMBA secured continued access for mountain bikers.

In the late '90s and early 2000s, the focus shifted to trail maintenance and advocating for a dedicated bike skills park in Calgary. The group's efforts gained momentum in 2008, leading to a pivotal shift toward trail building. The creation of the Ridgeback trail in Kananaskis in 2009 marked a significant milestone.

In 2016, the CMBA achieved another milestone by constructing Calgary's first public mountain bike skills park in the southeast, adjacent to Parkland and Deer Run communities. This marked a significant achievement in providing a dedicated space for riders to enhance their skills and enjoy the thrill of mountain biking within the city limits.
