Brisbane Bicycle Touring Association Inc. (BBTA) - Pedaling Through History

For nearly four decades, the Brisbane Bicycle Touring Association Inc. (BBTA) has been at the forefront of Brisbane's cycling culture. What started as a visionary idea by a group of passionate cyclists in August 1983 has evolved into a thriving community of over 220 members.

Foundation and Growth:In the early days, the club's pioneers, including Peter and Christine Brandis, Peter Muhling, Ken and Lee Sampson, Hazel Lombardo, Bob McQueen, and Peter Behan, identified a need for a dedicated bicycle touring group in Brisbane. The wheels were set in motion, and the 'Interested in Cycle touring' leaflets distributed at the Heart Foundation Cyclethon on August 21, 1983, marked the beginning. The foundation meeting on August 22 drew 35 cyclists, and the Brisbane Cycle Touring Association was officially established.

Evolution to BBTA:Over time, the club adapted and expanded its offerings, leading to the change of name to Brisbane Bicycle Touring Association Inc. upon incorporation. Notably, Ken and Lee Sampson, two of the original committee members, received life membership in 1998 for their pivotal role in founding and sustaining the club.

Riding Through Time:The inaugural newsletter for October-December 1983 featured a calendar of organized tours graded to accommodate various cycling abilities. Remarkably, many of these rides from the early years continue to be popular fixtures on the BBTA calendar, showcasing the enduring appeal and timeless joy of cycling.
