Bike New York, born in the heart of New York City in February 1977, has become a transformative force, empowering individuals and communities through the joy of bicycling. Our vision encompasses not only increasing ridership but also empowering the youth to lead healthy, productive lives.

The roots of Bike New York trace back to the collaboration between Sal Cirami of the American Youth Hostels (AYH) Bicycle Committee and Eric Prager, commissioned by the NYC Board of Education for a bicycle safety program. The result was the inception of the Five Boro Challenge, a pioneering event that went beyond the traditional rural settings of recreational rides.

The Five Boro Challenge, now a hallmark of Bike New York, was initially a 50-mile urban exploration starting and ending in Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens. It wound through the boroughs of Brooklyn, Staten Island, Manhattan, and the Bronx, creating a unique and celebratory experience.

Bike New York's journey is a testament to the transformative power of cycling, from safety programs and repair clinics to the annual celebration of the Five Boro Challenge. We continue to advocate for cycling, remove barriers, and expand services, with the vision of reaching and enriching the lives of more New Yorkers through the joy of biking.
