Century Road Club Association
Century Road Club Association (CRCA) boasts a remarkable history spanning over a century, originating in 1898. The New York Times archives chronicle the club's inception, capturing its founding and early activities. In 1917, CRCA's races, such as the Decoration Day handicap ten-mile bicycle road race on Pelham Parkway, found mention in the prestigious newspaper.
Lou Maltese, a prominent CRCA member, marked an era with his victory at the 100-mile Sesquicentennial bicycle race in Union City, NJ, setting a new American record. Post-racing success, Lou contributed significantly to CRCA, organizing iconic events like the 75-mile Apple Lap across all five boroughs and Olympic qualification trials in Central Park.
Even as the New York Times reported on vanished races like the 1970 Axel Swenson Memorial race, CRCA persisted. Overcoming challenges, including early morning race times, the club remained resilient. While Central Park and Kissena Velodrome no longer host National Championships, CRCA continues its legacy, organizing races throughout the year.
The journey reflects the enduring spirit of cycling in New York City, with CRCA at its forefront. The club's evolution, from attracting participants with early morning races to hosting events in challenging urban landscapes, is a testament to its commitment to the sport's growth and vibrancy in the city.
