About this club

Velo Club Bristol, established in 1954 during a dynamic period in British cycling, emerged from the dichotomy between the National Cycling Union (time trials) and the British League of Racing Cyclists (road racing). Enthusiasts like John Backwell, Phil Steadman, and Brian Dodd, drawn to the allure of continental road racing, naturally aligned with the BLRC when forming the club.

The late 1950s saw a fruitful association with the Bath Olympic club, leading to Bill Rains becoming VCB's inaugural President. Bill played a pivotal role in the development of the British Cycling Federation, contributing significantly to the establishment of professional racing in the late 60s. The symbiotic relationship between VCB and Bath Olympic involved mutual support for riders and events, with VCB members actively participating in Bath Olympic's prestigious promotions like the Tour of the West and the Weston Super Mare GP.

The 60s and 70s marked a golden era for cycling road racing in Bristol, and VCB played a significant role in this success. Riders achieved remarkable successes, securing four Division Championships. The club often fielded three teams in various races nationwide, providing opportunities for all members to participate in top-class events. Recognizing the importance of time trials, the club produced superb time trialists like Dave Doust, who became the National Junior 25-mile time trial champion in 1967. Notably, two VCB riders, Steve Taylor and Dari Kasprowicz, turned professional during this period, contributing to the professional peloton.

Under the leadership of John Backwell as Chairman, VCB became a leading club in the Western Division, organizing events known for their high standards, challenging courses, and attractive prizes. Notably, Steve Taylor's efforts led to the creation of a purpose-built circuit at Hengrove Park, the first in the UK, providing a safe entry to racing for young cyclists. The club continued to promote events on the road, with Steve Taylor's instrumental role in organizing races on the Portway and around the roads of Cannons Marsh, the precursor to the prestigious Bristol Grand Prix sponsored by the Royal Mail.

The passing of Bill Rains was a poignant moment for the club, but Dave Foxwell stepped into the role of president, offering invaluable support and guidance. Racing continued with distinction through the 80s and 90s, with leaders like Gary Cooper and Dave Park guiding senior riders and promising juniors like Simon Jones and David Rutty achieving victories for the club. Simon Jones later became the head coach with British Cycling, and David Rutty ascended to the senior ranks, becoming Divisional Champion, UK National Student RR Champion, and an Elite rider. Velo Club Bristol's enduring legacy reflects its commitment to excellence and the lasting impact of influential leaders on the cycling community.
