In 1986, Allan Hildon embarked on a mission to find like-minded cycling enthusiasts. Placing an advertisement seeking cycling buddies, his call was answered by three individuals – Peter Wilson, Les Clements, and Andrew L. This quartet embarked on Sydney Spokes' maiden ride, commencing from Centennial Park's Paddington 5-ways gates.

While Allan, Peter, and Les volunteered for the inaugural Spokes committee, it was Allan Hildon who emerged as the initial mover and shaker. The name "Sydney Spokes" itself was Allan's brainchild, inspired by an article about a New York-based cycling group called "Different Spokes" that he had read in the early 1980s.

Allan's dream of cycling with kindred spirits became a reality when he bravely placed an advertisement in 'Campaign' magazine's community notices section. To his surprise, not only did people show up, but they kept coming. The unexpected success of his ad marked the beginning of Sydney Spokes' enduring journey.
