Ever wondered about those dedicated cyclists who brave all weather conditions, pedal day and night, and embark on seemingly endless bike rides? Welcome to the world of Randonneuring, a unique cycling subculture, and in Seattle, it finds a thriving home with The Seattle International Randonneurs.
Randonneuring, defined by Randonneurs USA, is long-distance unsupported endurance cycling, emphasizing self-sufficiency over competition. Rooted in the rich history of cycling in France and Italy, randonneuring events showcase friendly camaraderie as their hallmark.
Contrary to racing, randonneuring involves time limits, often beginning with 100-kilometer rides. A Super Randonneur achieves a significant milestone by completing a series of 200-, 300-, 400-, and 600-kilometer rides. The pinnacle for randonneurs worldwide is the Paris Brest Paris, a legendary 1200-kilometer event held every four years since the 1890s.
In Seattle, Randonneurs form a diverse community ranging from some of the fastest and highest mileage riders globally to those who cherish the camaraderie of the group. Whether striving to meet time cutoffs or simply enjoying the shared passion for cycling, Seattle's Randonneurs encompass a broad spectrum of enthusiasts.
Randonneuring is often humorously dubbed "cycling with paperwork," as riders adhere to specific rules and requirements to certify their course completion within designated timeframes. Additionally, it's known as "riding for trinkets" due to the plethora of awards riders can earn by accumulating various rides.
