Fatboys Cycling Club
Since 1995, the Fatboys have been an iconic presence on the streets of Adelaide, pedaling their way into the city's cycling culture with flair. Recognizable by the whimsical pig gracing their bright yellow jerseys, this spirited group boasts around 100 riders, creating a lively spectacle on Adelaide's roads.
Organized group rides are a hallmark of the Fatboys' camaraderie, drawing varying numbers of participants, with up to 45 riders gathering for the flagship weekly ride on Sunday mornings. Additional mid-week rides and special weekend adventures punctuate the cycling calendar. Despite their penchant for two wheels, Fatboys are more than just cyclists—they're a community. Regular social activities bring members together, showcasing a blend of shared passion for cycling, fitness goals, and the simple joy of spending time with mates.
Fitness diversity defines the Fatboys, accommodating everyone from the moderately fit weekend-warrior to the more daring members who delve into local competitions. The group's ethos centers on the mystery of why they ride—whether it's a late mid-life endeavor, a pursuit of fitness, weight loss, or simply the rush of endorphins, adrenaline, and caffeine that follows a challenging ride. As the average age hovers above 50, the Fatboys humorously reflect on the heroes they could have been, pondering why their families don't fully appreciate their cycling prowess.
Beyond the pedal strokes, the Fatboys are an incorporated not-for-profit organization and proudly claim the title of South Australia's largest recreational cycling group. Members actively contribute to group activities, fostering a sense of shared responsibility. New recruits enter the Fatboys fold through introductions from existing members, solidifying the club's close-knit and welcoming nature.
So, when you spot a Fatboy cruising by, offer a friendly wave, and, ladies, consider a well-aimed blown kiss (or the equivalent words of encouragement). The Fatboys embody the joy of cycling, the bonds of friendship, and the vibrant spirit that makes them a dynamic force on Adelaide's cycling scene.
